Balchik — Caucasus Cable System Submarine Landing
The only submarine cable landing in Bulgaria that connects Europe to the Caucasus without crossing Türkiye.
Why Balchik
- Caucasus Cable System (CCS) submarine landing — direct Black Sea crossing to Poti, Georgia
- Strategic Türkiye bypass route for carriers routing Middle East, Caucasus and Central Asia traffic
- IP transit, DWDM wavelengths and dark fiber from a single Sofia Connect Edge facility
- 6 ms latency from Sofia via diverse terrestrial DWDM
Balchik is Bulgaria's Black Sea submarine cable landing hub. The Caucasus Cable System (CCS) terminates here before continuing overland on Sofia Connect's national DWDM ring. For carriers serving Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and the Middle East who want a geopolitically independent path that does not rely on Istanbul, Balchik is the only production-grade alternative in the region.
We operate a carrier-neutral Sofia Connect Edge facility at the CCS cable station. That means dark fiber handoff, DWDM wavelengths up to 400G, and BGP-capable IP transit at AS47872 are all available directly at the beach manhole — no extra metro-backhaul hop. Combined with our Varna and Burgas Edge sites, Balchik gives you multi-path Black Sea redundancy on a single SLA.

Frequently asked
- What is the Caucasus Cable System?
- A submarine fiber-optic cable across the Black Sea linking Poti (Georgia) with Balchik (Bulgaria). It provides a Europe ↔ Caucasus route that does not transit Türkiye.
- Can I buy a wavelength on CCS from Sofia Connect?
- Yes. We resell CCS capacity in 10G, 100G and 400G increments, with diverse protection via our terrestrial DWDM backbone to Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and onward to Frankfurt.
- What is the latency from Balchik to Sofia?
- Approximately 6 ms one-way on our domestic DWDM, with sub-50 ms failover to the diverse northern path via Pleven and Montana.
- Is dark fiber available?
- Yes, inside the CCS cable station and on select metro routes connecting Balchik to Varna and Dobrich.
